''It's our annual art week, where we celebrate art. It creates a nice sense of community, by bringing all the schools together,'' Bayfield High School art teacher Sophia Darling said.
Pupils from St Brigid's, Andersons Bay, Tainui, Tahuna Intermediate, Grants Braes, Musselburgh, Macandrew Bay, Broad Bay and Portobello schools were inspired by artists such as Colin McCahon, Nigel Brown, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh.
Themes included van Gogh's bedroom made from paper bags, masquerade masks, self-portraits of the young artists as they imagined themselves looking when they are 70 and the aurora australis as seen from Dunedin.
''The exhibition has a significant history. Each school has one winner and one highly commended. It's a big deal to even get your work selected for the exhibition,'' Ms Darling said.
An award ceremony was held at Bayfield on Tuesday night and the exhibition is on in the Bayfield High School hall daily until Sunday.
